Nellie O'Malley, 1906 Historical Doll

Archived American Girl Doll "Nellie" - Retired American Girl Dolls

Nellie was added to the collection of American Girls in June 2004 as part of a new line of BEST FRIEND dolls. She debuted as Samantha's "Best Friend" in conjunction with the Samantha DVD release. Even though Nellie was the ninth historical girl added after the collection was launched in 1986, she is really part of Samantha's collection. Nellie is not a limited edition doll; however, she was "archived" at the same time as Samantha. Sales of Nellie and her collection officially ceased as of May 2009.

Nellie is a resourceful, smart and resilient orphan girl growing up in 1906 New York who is trying to find a way to keep the promise she made to her dying mother -- to keep her family together. Orphaned and abandoned by their uncle, Nellie and her two little sisters are living with her best friend Samantha Parkington's family. Best of all, Samantha's Uncle Gard and Aunt Cornelia want to adopt all three of the O'Malley girls along with Samantha.

(RETIRED) SAMANTHA PARKINGTON, 1904 HISTORICAL DOLL!

Samantha Parkington, 1904 Historical Doll

Archived American Girl Doll "Samantha" - Retired American Girl Dolls

Samantha was one of the three American Girls that launched the collection in 1986 along with Molly and Kirsten. American Girl used the term 'archive' when it ceased production and sales of Samantha, her friend Nellie, and both their collections in May 2009. This was a unique move in the company's history for its Historical Characters.

Samantha is an only child -- a bright, compassionate girl -- growing up during the Edwardian period (although American Girl designated her as Victorian). She was orphaned at age five and is being raised by her wealthy Victorian-era grandmother in fictional Mount Bedford, New York.

Samantha's world is filled with frills and finery, parties, and play, but she also observes that times are not good for everybody. She befriends a poor servant girl named Nellie O'Malley, whose life is nothing like Samantha's. That's why she tries to make a difference in the life of her friend. Eventually Samantha, Nellie, and Nellie's young sisters are adopted by Samantha's uncle and aunt. Samantha book themes include women's suffrage, child labor, and classism.

2009 GIRL OF THE YEAR!!!!!!!!!! CHRISSA MAXWELL!!!!

She her collection was released by the American Girl Doll company on January 1, 2009 and an accompanying direct-to-DVD film entitled "Chrissa Stands Strong" based on her story premiered January 5 and became available for purchase the next day. Chrissa's books and DVD focus on peer bullying issues. Both books are written by Mary Casanova.

Chrissa is the first Girl of the Year to have any "best friend" companion dolls. The two characters, Sonali Matthews and Gwen Thompson, are from the books and movie, and neither had a separate collection.

Gwen Thompson is white with blond hair and brown eyes. She is a lonely girl in her class; Chrissa is the first to befriend her. Gwen lived at the homeless shelter and felt that her situation made it too embarrassing for her to make any friends. The doll has the Classic Mold, blond hair with bangs, and brown eyes.

Sonali Matthews is at least partially South Asian/Indian, as her mother's parents are from India. She was part of the Queen Bees with Tara and Jadyn, but stopped being their friend after their cruel pranks and became Chrissa's friend. Marisol is a lively 10-year-old girl who was born to dance. She's a fourth-grader who lives with her loving parents in a busy and largely Hispanic neighborhood in the heart of Chicago. Marisol goes to school (where she is a Two-Square champion) takes care of her cat, Rascal, plays with the kids in her neighborhood, and takes dance lessons. Ballet folklorico (Mexican folkdance) is her favorite type of dance -- and where she really shines -- but she's been exposed to some jazz and a little tap. She's also taking ballet, but she's new to it and a little impatient with its rigors. Her attitude towards ballet changes only slightly when she meets a wonderful new neighbor. Miss Mendoza is a former Rockette who gently reminds Marisol that ballet is worth working hard at, because it's the basis for all serious dance. The upsetting news that her family is moving out to the suburbs is made worse when Marisol learns that the dance studio in her new neighborhood has closed. No tap, no ballet folklorico -- not even ballet. She may have to take karate lessons! Instead, with the help of new friends, resourceful Marisol finds a way to keep dancing. She learns how to combine the best of her old world with a renewed commitment to stretch and grow and try her hardest, no matter how challenging it might be.
