Chrissa Maxwell - 2009 Girl of the Year, Plus Her Best Friends Sonali Mathews & Gwen Thompson
Limited Edition Girls of Today - Retired American Girl Doll Chrissa
Retired American Girl Doll "Chrissa" is the seventh Girl of the Year. She her collection was released by the American Girl Doll company on January 1, 2009 and an accompanying direct-to-DVD film entitled "Chrissa Stands Strong" based on her story premiered January 5 and became available for purchase the next day. Chrissa's books and DVD focus on peer bullying issues. Both books are written by Mary Casanova.
Chrissa is the first Girl of the Year to have any "best friend" companion dolls. The two characters, Sonali Matthews and Gwen Thompson, are from the books and movie, and neither had a separate collection.
Gwen Thompson is white with blond hair and brown eyes. She is a lonely girl in her class; Chrissa is the first to befriend her. Gwen lived at the homeless shelter and felt that her situation made it too embarrassing for her to make any friends. The doll has the Classic Mold, blond hair with bangs, and brown eyes.
Sonali Matthews is at least partially South Asian/Indian, as her mother's parents are from India. She was part of the Queen Bees with Tara and Jadyn, but stopped being their friend after their cruel pranks and became Chrissa's friend. The doll has an all-new face mold with dark skin, dark eyes, and long wavy dark hair to represent her Indian heritage.
